Traditional eggnog is bursting with health benefits. The combination of raw milk, raw eggs, maple syrup, and some spices will create a much healthier version then what can be bought from the store.
You may be wondering, sure it’s healthier – but what about the taste? Well, don’t despair, just because it’s healthier does not mean it lacks flavor or that nostalgic eggnog flavor we all dream about when winter rolls around!
In addition to this healthier version of eggnog, I have another recipe that will help boost your immune system and keep you feeling your best this holiday season! It’s great for fighting against the cold and flu, be sure to try my elderberry syrup recipe!
My husband gets some credit
Before Thanksgiving this year, my husband and I were hanging out in the kitchen after the kids went to bed. I told him I really wanted to make eggnog, but recipes I found had you cooking the eggs. I didn’t want to go through the trouble. Besides, I had always thought that traditional eggnog had raw eggs. So that is what I wanted.
I also realized that since we wouldn’t be heating it up, we would have granulated sugar bits in our cups. I also didn’t want that. My options in my pantry for alternative sweeteners were honey or maple syrup.
Maple syrup was calling to me with it rich and robust flavor so out it came with the eggs and milk!
I grabbed the three most common Christmas spices and asked my husband what he thought.
He surprised me when he said, “Don’t you think it would be better with vanilla too?
Umm, YES! It was late, my brain obviously wasn’t thinking!
We combined the ingredients in ratios we thought would work, blended it up and taste tested. It was good but not good enough. So, we added more of the things we thought it needed then when we were satisfied. We put it in the fridge and went to bed.
Our sweet friends arrived for Thanksgiving and we served it and tried it again ourselves. It was better than the night before!! The flavors were so full and robust – and just heavenly!

Is eggnog healthy?
Nowadays, eggnog comes with a lot of unhealthy additions. What was once a nutritious holiday drink is now unhealthy and lacks nutrients. After learning about the additions of high fructose corn syrups, artificial flavors, and artificial colors to this holiday family favorite beverage, we began looking for healthier alternatives. Natural grocers carry a good alternative if you are in a pinch and don’t have time to make it.
1. Traditional eggnog contains raw eggs
- Raw eggs are full of vitamins and minerals such as: calcium, phosphorous, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin D, essential amino acids, choline (regulate memory, mood, muscle control), lutein and zeaxanthin (antioxidants)
- Raw eggs are also heart healthy! They contain HDL or “good cholesterol” and omega-3’s.
- Did you know that the inside of an egg is sterile? It has to be for life to form. If the egg is housing harmful bacteria, then it is present on the shell. When you crack the shell, cross-contamination can occur and introduce harmful bacteria to the sterile contents inside the egg. An extra step to reduce your risk of infection is to wash your eggs in warm soapy water.
- Getting your eggs from a good source is important as well. Healthy chickens make healthy eggs. If you don’t have your own backyard chickens, find a good farm that sells healthy eggs. They taste better and are packed with more nutrition than store bought eggs. Also, farm eggs are not as old as store bought, which can be up to 60 days old before they are used by you in your home.
2. Raw milk
- The benefits outweigh the fears. Raw milk contains essential fats, nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
- It promotes the natural production of the lactase enzyme, which aids in milk digestion.
3. Raw cream
- Raw cream has more healthy fats, which mean more fat-soluble vitamins. This is especially good for young children because they need healthy fats for development.
4. Maple syrup – organic is preferred
5. Vanilla extract
6. Cinnamon powder – organic
7. Nutmeg powder – organic
8. Clove powder – organic
How to make traditional eggnog
For this recipe the tools you will need are below:
- A high powered blender like the Vitamix
- A storage container: I double this recipe and store in half gallon mason jars with a pour spout. The pour spout works on any wide mouth mason jar so a quart will work also if you are making a small batch.
Steps for making the perfect homemade eggnog
- To make this holiday beverage, you will add all the ingredients into the Vitamix blender.
- Hit start and during the first minute, slowly work up to the highest speed setting.
- Allow the mixture to mix at the highest setting for two minutes.
- After two minutes, dial down the speed back to one.
- With your mason jars, or other container ready, quickly pour the eggnog into your container. The spices will settle quickly and you don’t want to leave them all at the bottom of the Vitamix when they should be in your Christmas drink!
- Another option is to leave it in your Vitamix container and store it that way. When you are ready to serve just blend it for a few seconds and pour into cups.
- Set your container in the fridge overnight. This is important for the flavors to develop and the vanilla extract to absorb properly.
- In the morning you should see three layers from the natural separation. The top will be a foamy brown, the middle a tan liquid, and the bottom a dark brown spice layer.
- Give it a good shake and set back in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
- Prior to each time you serve it, I recommend shaking it well to combine the spices back into the liquid.
I hope you like this eggnog recipe as much as we do! Please share in the comments if you make it this holiday season!
And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

I don’t even like store bought eggnog, but my family loves it. So when we went dairy free it was hit or miss if we could find almond eggnog. Now that we can find a good source of raw milk I knew I had to find a good homemade recipe. A friend posted this recipe with a review saying it was the best eggnog she’s ever tried. Boy was she right. I even love it! 😋

My family adores eggnog in the winter months. It goes back three generations of sipping on the rich creamy mug of goodness while wrapping gifts, hanging ornaments and baking gingerbread Christmas treats.
In the years we have searched for a homemade recipe, nothing quite hits the spot. We’ve settled with buying store bought cartons that are overpriced and underwhelming.
This, has changed all that! Not only is it better than anything you can buy , you are reassured of its wholesome ingredients with healing raw milk , real maple syrup and immune boosting spices
I can not wait to continue the tradition of eggnog with my family now, and have a time tested recipe that will last over my lifetime. Thank you!
