Our skin is our largest organ. What we put on it impacts our health and wellness.
An effective way of administering medicine is via our skin. Many lotions and makeups are loaded with toxic chemicals and should be avoided. The skin absorbs those toxic chemicals and it contaminates our bloodstream.
Let’s take a step to protect our health in what may seem like a little thing. Knowing what you are putting on your body is just as important as what is going in your body.
What Is Whipped Tallow?
Rendered beef or mutton fat is the only ingredient making up tallow. A process of melting down the fat and purifying it leaves you with pure tallow, ready to use in beauty products or soaps.
Once melted down, combine it with other ingredients to create different types of whipped tallow. Then after it has started to harden, use a hand mixer or a standing mixer to whip it until it is a fluffy, white cream.
Whipping the tallow creates a more satisfying product to use, however it does reduce its shelf life to about six months if keeping it at room temperature.
Is Whipped Tallow Good For Your Skin?
After using it for some time, my answer is yes! But let me share with you some of the health benefits as to why this is good for your skin:
1. Benefits of tallow on your skin1:
It contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K, K2.
Vitamin E is known to help repair skin cells by defending against free radicals from sun exposure. It also aids in the prevention of collagen breakdown. Since Vitamin E declines with age, adding it to your skin regiment is important for protecting your cells. Since tallow is a fat, it acts as a natural carrier for fat soluble vitamins and increases the absorption rate.2 This helps to prevent dryness at the cellular level.
Fatty acids
Fatty acids can regulate the tissue regeneration process.3
- Oleic acid is omega-9. This is produced by our bodies, however, often times we don’t make enough.
- Alpha linoleic and linoleic acids are good at aiding ailments like eczema, rosacea, and acne. A deficiency in linoleic acids can cause itchy skin.4
- Palmitoleic acid has antimicrobial and anti-aging properties. It also speeds up wound healing with its anti-inflammatory properties.3
- Stearic acid has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties.5 Lard and tallow can contain up to 30 percent more stearic acid compared to plant products. 6
- Conjugated linoleic fatty acid (CLA) has been found to reduce some cancers in humans.7
Comedogenic Scale
The make-up of tallow is similar to oils our bodies create. Due to the likeness, tallow is easily absorbed by our skin and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth, not greasy.
You may be thinking, is it going to cause me to break out? While everyone has a different skin profile, I can tell you that a dermatologist created a rating system called the Comedogenic Scale. What does this have to do with tallow? It is rated as a two on the scale, meaning that it is labeled as noncomedogenic. Noncomedogenic just means that it will not clog or block pores.
After using this product on myself and my family, it has not caused any clogged pores or skin issues for us. In fact, it has helped my skin and my face substantially, reducing wrinkles – leaving my face and skin feeling soft and silky! Due to the similar make up and compatibility with our skin; pure, grass-fed tallow is a great choice for hydrating and nourishing your skin and face.
It has also helped my daughter with a poison ivy rash she had on her face.

How to Make Lavender Whipped Tallow
To make this homemade cream you need four ingredients.
- Grass-fed beef fat that has been rendered and purified into tallow. My preference is homemade tallow. You can go to a reputable, local butcher and ask to buy their beef fat. Then follow my easy step-by-step guide for rending your own tallow or you can buy it online.
- Organic virgin coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties, improves skin barrier function, and protects against the damaging effects from the sun that cause: skin ageing, inflammation, and carcinogenesis. It also aids in treatment of atopic dermatitis and eczema.8
- Organic jojoba oil is often found in sunscreens and moisturizers. It has proven effects of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties, and promotes antibacterial effects in skin infections, skin aging, and wound healing. Overall, it is used as a skin barrier and aids in skin repair.9
- Organic lavender oil is a calming, relaxing addition that will complement the moisturizing cream. You could substitute a different oil, however, I chose lavender for its calming properties to help repair and heal the skin.
Simple steps for lavender whipped tallow
- Start by gently melting 5oz of tallow in a pan.
- Once melted, remove from your heat source and mix in 1 Tbsp of coconut oil, 20-30 drops of jojoba oil, and 30-50 drops of lavender oil.
- Then place your tallow mixture in the refrigerator for 45 minutes to 1 hour. You want the tallow mixture to be a paste like consistency before whipping it. Not completely solid but not a liquid.
- Once it has set remove it from the refrigerator.
- Using a hand mixer, whip the tallow for about 1-2 minutes, or until it becomes fluffy and white.
- I recommend storing it in a sealable glass container.
- Enjoy nourishing yours and your family’s skin!
And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.

I love whipped tallow! We switched to using it last year and I can tell a world of difference in my skin. We also nursed my husband’s burn using tallow. It’s very versatile and easy.
I love hearing how you used tallow to help your husband! What a gift to create a safe product that helps those you love!
