If you’re like us, we are on a never-ending journey to provide healthier options in our home and for our family. While searching for condiments in the grocery store, we were continually left settling or going home empty handed.
Ranch salad dressing was no exclusion. We searched health food stores and read many labels trying to find a suitable one to love, all to no avail. It seems like even all the organic options are filled with less than desirable ingredients like soy, canola, and seed oils.
Since making kefir milk, I have been motivated and encouraged to add this amazing, gut healthy food to our everyday diets. While we do love kefir milk in chocolate peanut butter kefir smoothies and cherry kefir smoothies, we don’t make them every day.
However, there is another way to expose our gut microbiome to this amazing probiotic. Not only does it taste better that the store-bought stuff, it doesn’t contain seed oils, preservatives, and who knows what other harmful toxins for our health.
This homemade kefir ranch dressing is great on top of pizza, baked potatoes, salads, or for dipping homemade French fries, veggies, and breadsticks.
Is kefir milk healthy?1
For years, I was oblivious to the benefits of adding kefir milk to our family’s diet. Recently, a friend gave me some of her kefir grains and we started consuming the fermented milk after 24 hours!
I have made many ferments in the past but this was by far the easiest and quickest fermented food I had ever made.
After incorporating kefir milk into your daily diet, you are likely to have better digestion, lower blood sugar, lower cholesterol, increased gut microbiome health (decreased indigestion problems and an increase in normal bowel movements).
I started reading published studies about kefir grains and was so excited to learn that it has enormous health properties like:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-oxidative
- Anti-cancer
- Anti-microbial
- Anti-diabetic
- Anti-hypertensive
- Anti-hypercholesterolemic
This is just touching the surface of this amazing little ferment! If you are interesting in what my deep dive into scientific articles revealed, you can read more in this article: Kefir Milk: The Powerhouse Probiotic For Gut Health And More!
Kefir ranch dressing ingredients
- Kefir this is the star of the show. It adds that tangy creamy flavor along with its gut boosting probiotics. If you don’t have homemade kefir, you can use store bought.
- Mayonnaise this helps to thicken the dressing. If you like your ranch dressing on the thinner side, add less mayo and more kefir. If you like your ranch dressing to be thicker for dipping, add more mayo and less kefir. If you don’t have homemade mayonnaise, you can use store bought.
- Spices and herbs will give the kefir ranch dressing that signature savory flavor. These include: dried chives, onion powder, garlic powder, dried dill, dried parsley, salt and ground black pepper.
- Acid this will help bring all the flavors together and help it pour with ease. I like to use lemon juice.
Kefir ranch dressing substitutes
- Substituting the mayonnaise, You can substitute the mayo with plain yogurt or sour cream. The flavor will be slightly altered by these changes but still be a delicious kefir ranch.
- Substituting mayonnaise If you don’t have any of those on hand you could just double the kefir milk in this recipe. However, the mayo, sour cream, and yogurt options help to thicken up the ranch. Your kefir ranch dressing will taste good but be thin and less creamy tasting.
- Substituting the spices and herbs You can use fresh herbs and spices; just be sure they are finely chopped before adding them. If you don’t have a particular spice on hand, you can omit, however, the overall flavor is dependent on those mention in the ingredients list. If you have to omit something, try to replace with either marjoram, tarragon, or cilantro.
- Substituting the acid A great substitution would be apple cider vinegar. If you don’t have lemon or ACV, you can substitute with olive oil or avocado oil.

Notes
Storing kefir ranch dressing
Since it is so easy to whip up, I make it in small batches when we need it. Often times, there aren’t any leftovers! However, if you do have leftovers, it is recommended to keep in the refrigerator for no more that 1 week. Kefir milk is a living beneficial bacteria. Alone, it can be refrigerated for up to 6 weeks, however, the mayonnaise and other ingredients may begin breaking down quicker and become bad after 1 week.Storing kefir ranch dressing
